Well, it has been a bit crazy in the past month...there was a birth (welcome Axl), death (thinking of you Shannon), wedding, job offer, and a move. And I spent many hours crying about how much I was going to miss Humboldt...
My life has completely changed, and I am currently living in Oakland. I got a call last month on a Friday afternoon, drove down Oakland that weekend, had an interview on Monday, got the official offer the next Friday, and spent the next 2 weeks hanging out with as many friends as I could. Andy and I drove down here last week and got me set up in my new house. I am working a few weeks before Andy comes down and we can get a house. I am subletting a room from a really great guy until Andy can move down here. The house is beautiful and right next to Piedmont, which is a beautiful city within the city limits of Oakland with all of these beautiful houses, hugh old trees, and lots of parks. I am also just uphill from Lake Merritt, which has a great trail to hike, bike, or run around. There are also 2 sweet kitties and 2 sweet greyhounds that live here...they all help me to not feel so lonely since I am without Andy or many friends in the area. My job seems really cool so far...I love the people I work for, and the company is in this amazing transistion period. They are growing so fast that they can barely keep up with hiring people. So that is good because I will have the opportunity to grow with them and work on some really neat environmental engineering projects. I am starting out working on groundwater & soil remediation sites in the northern CA area. And, we'll see where it goes from there...
Oh, it was hard to leave Humboldt! That drive to Blue Lake where I can see the Mad River and the mountains in the background, days at college cove, drinking in Jenkins 214, lasagna cookoffs, and all of our amazing friends...it was tough to not cry about that stuff everyday. But, it was time for us to move, no matter how hard it is. I hate going through this everytime I move to a new city, I make all these amazing friends and have such a great network...and then I have to do it all over again. But, I think I have a little gypsy spirit in me...because part of me loves the change.
As hard as it was to leave, it was sooooooooooooooooooooo amazing to move here. I love this area! I love all the different people and all the different things that are going on here. It just feels right! Well, I am off to have some dinner with my temporary roommate (Marc) and try not to think about missing Andy.

Not so bad afterall
Despite the fact that it has been so smoky and hot here...we have found new things to keep us occupied. We have been properly motivated to get out of the house and get down to the beach more frequently than we are used to, and that has been a lot of fun. Mad River Beach has been our spot of choice for the past couple of weeks; the picture of the sand dollars is just what we found in one day. What a treasure! Andy and I are like little kids down there every time we find something...and we get to see the seals every time we visit. They like to hang out right at the mouth of the river (that is where their dinner hangs out: fish). We have also been swimming a lot in the Mad River...upstream about 4 miles (right next to our house). So exercise and entertainment are not so bad a trade off for smoke and heat. Oh how I love summer...

I'm an aunt (again)
I forgot to mention that I am a proud new aunt of a baby bull mastiff, Baxter. Blake (bro) got a new little puppy to keep his and Christina's (girlfriend) Rottweiler's busy...well that isn't really why he got the new pup, but I am sure that is what he is doing. What a friggin' cute dog, but what puppy isn't. I have really been feeling the urge to get a dog myself, especially after this. But, I know that we can't really get any more animals until we move. We have set a date for that (the move) by the way. October 1st is the date we will be in the Bay Area regardless of the job situation. I cannot just sit here and wait for the right job to come along. I have begun the steps necessary to work for myself...we will see how it goes.
We're dying over here
Auuugggghhh...just when we thought the smoke had cleared, it came back. The fires have spread and are closer to the coast now; smoke is everywhere. Everything has this really strange orange glow because the sun is filtered through all the smoke. And to add to the misery of breathing in all that ash...we are having record breaking temperatures. For example, the previous record temperature for this area is 86 degrees back in 1985. It is already 76 today and fore casted to be 103 by this afternoon. The air quality people are suggesting that we keep all doors and windows closed to avoid the smoky air, but no one here has air conditioners because it doesn't usually get so freakin' hot...so how are we supposed to stay inside of a cooking house. We are going to sit down by the river next to our house in hopes of finding some fresh air; there is usually a breeze that blows up river from the ocean.

Here comes the sun...do, do, do, do
I am soooooooooooooo sick of reading all these articles about how we should slather ourselves in sunscreen if we are going to step outside just to get our mail. I understand the risk of skin cancer, and the link between it and sunburns...but come on. Do you really think that we cannot allow our skin to ever see the sunlight again? I have always felt that the warnings about the sun were over-exaggerated...party because I love to sit in the sun (it is on my list of top 5 favorite things in the world) and partly because we have been in the sun as a species for thousands of years (our bodies have to use it for something). As a matter of fact, it is unhealthy when we don't allow the sun to shine on your body. Did you know sunlight actually decreases the risk of certain cancers including: pancreatic, lung, breast, prostate, and ovarian? The Moores Cancer Center at the Univeristy of California, San Diego (UCSD) states that nearly 150,000 cases of cancer could be prevented in the US alone just by allowing more sun to kiss our skin. Not only that by sunlight helps us sleep better, provides mood-elevating effects, suppresses overactive immune system, and lessens Alzheimer's symptoms (Kotz, 2008). The FDA released their report on the skin cancer, skin aging, and sunscreen last and said, "FDA has tentatively concluded that the available evidence fails to show that sunscreen use alone helps prevent skin cancer o premature skin aging. Thus, the anti-aging, skin cancer, and sun damage claims proposed by the comments would be false or misleading due to lack of sufficient data in support of these claims." (FDA, 2007) Just search for yourself to see all the research that proves how beneficial the the sun is. While the Vitamin D (the beneficial vitamin we produce when being in the sun) can be taken in supplement form, it is possible to overdoes when taking it that way (weird), but certain food also have Vitamin D to help us during the less sunny winter months.
Another thing that really pisses me off is the sunscreen industry...yes, I wear sunscreen when I know that I am going to be at the river all day because I don't want to burn up, but I feel really guilty when I get in the water and I see the toxic puddle of sunscreen that has come off of my body and is now in the water. Poor aquatic life...always having to deal with my choices of what I am putting in the water. And have you ever read the labels on a sunscreen bottle? I don't I even want to get started on that today...I am going to lay in the sun!

Californias a burnin'
Well kids, we are on fire over here in Cali! Last night a fire jumped the Trinity River and the South Fork to start even more fires that are threatening houses and closed Hwy 299 for a couple of days. The smoke is so bad at our house that we cannot see a couple of miles away...and we are expecting more lightening storms in the next couple of days that could start even more fires. I was interested in seeing just how many fires there were across the state and found this map from the Department of Forestry, along with some interesting statistics of resources being used to fight these fires. The really bad news is that we haven't even hit the peak of fire season yet, and this happens to be a very dry year...I hope we don't just burn away this summer.
Statistics Provided by Department of Forestry, California, June 27th, 2008.
Total Fires: 1,211 |
Acres: 193,470 |
Contained Fires: 266 |

So, Andy and I were looking through my baby pictures when we were in Arkansas...and it seemed like I really didn't look like a lot of my baby pictures. I was having a really hard time seeing "myself" in the pictures until we turned the page and saw this picture...we both just started laughing so hard because the look on my face is one that I still give when I am pissed or if I think you said something really stupid. Poor Andy has seen this look many times, and for those of you that have been my friends for a long time, you have also probably seen this look.
PS-Check out that 70's lamp and couch in the background.
Here is another one that is pretty funny...yes that is a Schlitz.

From one end to the other
Hmmm...I just skimmed over my last blog and realized how long ago that seemed; it is just that my thoughts have literally changed course so drastically. I guess that would have to do with our amazing trip to the city and the crazy shit happening here in Nor Cal. First, I will tell you a little about our trip. We got to visit with the parents, Noel, and Scott for a few days. The original plan for the weekend (which involved a beer festival and meeting up with Arkansas friends) ended up falling through at the last minute, so we ended up taking a walking/drinking tour of Chinatown, downtown, and the SOMA districts of San Francisco for Friday night...lots of fun until I woke up at 8 the next morning with a horrible hangover. All I could think was, "Please don't let it be noon, right now!" (Our check out time). Luckily it was only 8 and after a few more hours of sleep I was ready for the day. We hung out in Golden Gate park all day on Sunday...there was all kind of stuff going on and so many people out that day. We looked at lots of art exhibits, visited the Japanese Tea Garden, listened to a little symphony, played on the beach, and enjoyed some good beer at a brewery that is at the end of the park. We got to celebrate father's day late with the parents and enjoy lots of good roast beast (beef). It started to get kinda crazy from here...the night before there was this really crazy lightening storm that started 840 fires in the area. It was pretty hazy in Santa Rosa, but as we headed north the smoke just kept getting thicker. It got so bad at one point that you couldn't even see the hills surrounding 101; we just listened the the public radio station the whole way up listening for any road closures or evacuations. Luckily, we made it home safely only to find out that the D E A and the F B I have set up shop in our area for some crazy week long bust. It just feels kinda crazy here with everyone freaking out about the fires and the busts going on. I don't even remember what the hell I was worrying about last week...

Drama....
Why oh why do I get soooooo wrapped up in personal drama? I have been stressed out for the last week thinking about the relationships and drama that go on between myself and others (and drama between others and others). I am not sure why conflict between two human beings can consume my thoughts for so much of the day...I have found myself many times this week, doing really great stuff...but am still thinking about those conflicts. I never used to be this way; my motto for many years was "Fuck It". If you can't talk about it with the person or work on resolving it, then there is no point in wondering what he said/she said. Maybe I just have too much time on my hands right now. There is really not much going on my mind at this point in my life, so I must just be looking for some type of "entertainment" to keep myself from getting bored. Uggggg, that can't be good. I need to read a good book! Oh well, we are headed out of town tomorrow morning for a visit to Andy's parents. Noel is on his way here from Portland as I type this...and we will leave out of here soon. I am also hooking up with a friend of mine from Arkansas that just moved to the Bay Area this year. We were on the Pom-Pon squad together in high school (yes, I was on the Pom-Pon squad) and haven't seen each other since then (I think). Maybe I will be distracted enough to not even think about what other people are thinking.

War Pigs
Wow...we just got finished hearing the band next door play War Pigs! There is a fund raiser in the park right next to our house with live music all day, and the first band was this rock cover band that has been rockin' this neighborhood since noon. There are lots of festivals in the park, but usually the first band is a mellow or smaller band. Not this morning...hard rock first thing! We are going to grill some food and hang out with friends in our yard and listen to the live music all day. We are soooooooo thankful that it is a beautiful day here in Blue Lake!

It's been a week?
I can't believe it has been a whole week since I posted my last blog entry...the time really has been flying by. It is June already, and the pendulum that I live by is currently in the "desperately wanting a job" phase right now. I have been applying to even more jobs this week...kinda. Let me back up a few days: We went to the city for a weekend visit to help Scott move into his new apartment, and ended up having sooooooooo much fun. Andy, Mary (our friend who also doesn't have a job), and I left Thursday for the bay area. We hung out in SF that evening and met up with Scott later that night to explore his new neighborhood. We ate Chinese and drank some beer at the local tavern...both places were OK, but the next morning (after moving all his stuff into his apartment), we were driving around looking for a good breakfast place when we turned the corner and this big, beautiful, brightly painted building called us to it. We thought it was Mexican place and went in only to discover that is was Salvadoran...similar, but oh so different. I randomly ordered this thing called a pupusa, and my life has not been the same since. It is the Salvadorian version of a corn tortilla that is stuffed with beans, cheese, and/or meat. All I could think of was the time my friend Shannon had discovered hush puppies for the first time and shouted, "How have I never had this before?" We ended up eating at that place the next day and we attempted to make our own pupusa dinner once we got home. But, back to the trip...we drove up to SF after our amazing breakfast and played in the Yerba Buena Garden playgrounds (which have the fastest slide I have ever been on), got in trouble for playing in the Yerba Buena Garden playgrounds (I guess we were way too old), visited the Museum of Modern Art, got in trouble at the MOMA for spinning too much (I guess we were too old for spinning too much!?!), ate Indonesian food, drove down the crookedest street in the world, visited Pier 39 and ate really good chocolate, barked at the sea lions, and went to this fancy little bar that infuses all their liquors with crazy fruit concoctions. Overall, it was a very successful trip. Thank you San Francisco!

Scott is almost here!!!
Yippee!!! Our good friend Scott is almost here...he has been driving across the country with all his stuff and kitty to move to San Jose. Andy, Mary, and I are headed down the the Bay area tomorrow morning for a little fun before he arrives, and then we will help him move into his new apartment. We are so glad to have even more friends that will live close to us...well, hopefully we will actually get to live there sometime soon. Anyway, here we come Fluevog store, MOMA, and Indian food restaurants!

Not so many margaritas
Monday turned out to be a much better day...we ended up only making it to one Memorial Day cookout here in Blue Lake. Our friend Daryl invited us to some of his friends house who happen to be our neighbors, so we rode our sweet bikes over to the party and had a great time. We ended up only knowing 3 people there so we got to meet a lot of new friends. And we both only had a couple of beers so there was not repeat of yesterday :( I had a lot of cherries so I got to make this really yummy cherry custard dessert with graham cracker/pecan crust! I am feeling good today and successfully applied to 7 (yes, 7) jobs! Applying to one job takes a pretty big time investment because each company has their own online form they want you to fill out...I sometimes wonder why I even made a resume since no one even wants it. Oh well, I am off to do a "job dance" (kinda like a rain dance) to increase my odds at getting a job.

Too many margaritas
Ugggg....what a day! The sushi party last night was a success (mostly); we got to hang out with our friends, Melanie and Ben, for the first time in months. I can't believe that we only live 5 miles away from them, but don't get to see them that much. We got to catch up last night over yummy rolls and never ending margaritas thanks to Ben. I have been paying for last nights fun all day; I am never drinking again. (hehehe) Just like I said I was never going to talk shit about people again...and what did I do last night? Talk shit, and it bit me in the ass. My news years resolution was to stop talking about people in a negative way. But after a few drinks, I was talking to this really sweet girl that I thought had broken up with her not so sweet boyfriend. I was making fun of him and saying how good it was that she wasn't with him, and then she told me that they were still together and had no plans of breaking up. Geesh, how embarrassing! On one hand, I don't feel bad about being honest about my feelings. But, I do feel bad that I made her feel uncomfortable all because I wanted to make fun of someone. That is exactly why I made that new years resolution. Well, all that I can do is learn from that situation and try a little harder next time the urge comes along again. I guess I am going back to my couch now...I still feel really yucky!

Yippee...it's Saturday!
We actually woke up early (8:30am) this morning and got down to Farmers Market to beat the crowds...lots of people are in town for the Kinetic Sculpture Race that started today. We got to see a few of the sculptures getting ready for their safety checks. There was everything from a simple snail to a very complex hippo that had moving jaws, ears, and even had someone hanging in the butt area that was playing a marimba. The race will go through Arcata today and will enter Humboldt Bay tomorrow morning. I think we are going to watch the water part of the race...it is always interesting to see how the creators plan to float their sculptures. Well, we are off to a sushi party. Great for my tummy, but not so great for Andy's (he hates fish). As an added bonus for my feet, I get to wear my new boots that I got from Mr. Fluevog after winning "the contest"! Oh how I love these boots! Happy Memorial Weekend!

We're home.
Well, it was a wonderful trip to Arkansas; it was the first I had been back during the spring in a long time...and I loved it. My yearly trip is usually at Christmas, when it is very cold and all the trees are brown. Spring in Arkansas is in the 70's and all the flowers are blooming. We got to have parties outside, play horseshoes (and snake ball), go to a "hillbilly" theme park, walk outside at night, smell honeysuckle (oh the honeysuckle), and just enjoy hanging out with all our wonderful friends. I will never go back again during Christmas, I am going to change my yearly trip to the spring time...I remember the last time I went back in the spring, I ended up staying the whole summer because it was so much fun. And this time was just the same. I am putting some of the pictures in an online album on Flickr for those of you that want to see pics of all the things we did. As much fun as we had, we were glad to return home (so was our kitty). The next morning after flying home, we both felt like we had a vacation hangover complete with headaches and sore muscles. We have recovered now and have just been enjoying being home...our garden even had some strawberries for us to eat. Now, we are preparing for the Memorial Day weekend. There is a crazy kinetic sculpture race that starts tomorrow, lots of Bar-B-Q's, and the Stanley Cup Playoffs begin.

OMFG
I have so much to write about in this little online journal...we have been in Arkansas for almost a week now, and we have had soooooo much freakin' fun: graduation parties, BBQ's, Silver Dollar City, and lots of fried food. But for now, the only thing that I can talk about is Bubblesoap. What is bubblesoap you ask? It is only my favorite website that has been out of commission for the last few years. I randomly search for it every 6 months to see if the creators put it back online, and guess what I found about an hour ago? Now, this site is not for everyone...but for those of you who are easily entertained, Bubble soap is the shi-ite. The best game on there is the mixulator: click here. You can make your very own song with your keyboard and the site has all these great animations to go along with it. If you are bored online, check out the site...there is lots of random weird crap to look at. I love Bubblesoap!!!!!

Another beautiful day
We drove down to the Eel River today to meet Andy's parents and some family friends that flew in from Michigan. It was the only time that we would get to visit with Bill and Gaye (the family friends) because we are leaving soon for Arkansas, so it was a great opportunity to just relax by the river, have a picnic, and laugh with friends. Bill, Gaye and the parents have been friends for about 30 years...and it was a lot of fun to watch them play. I hope that I get to have all my friends for that long! So we can tell each other the same stories over and over and still laugh at them. Our picnic included bacon (did you think anything else would be acceptable?)...it was in the burgers and on the cornbread. After lunch we sat in the sun on the Eel River and I got to take my first underwater picture with my camera. The water was so clear and beautiful that you can see pretty far behind me in the picture. The water was perfect and the sun was freakin' hot...until we drove back home into the fog. Now we under the "fog curtain" and it's cold here in Humboldt. Andy and I can't wait to fly to Arkansas and enjoy that warm sunshine. We leave Wednesday!!! And as an added bonus, our friend Mary is coming to stay at our house while we are gone...our kitty is going to be sooooooooo happy.

Sweet Success
What a wonderful Sunday...Andy, Andrea and I laid in the yard all day and drank Olympia (because it was the cheapest and we discovered yesterday at the cheap beer challenge that no one can tell the difference in cheap beers). It was a good recovery from the bacon party that included lots of cheap beer, bacon wrapped asparagus, bacon wrapped jalapeño poppers, bacon wrapped shrimp...and lots of other random bacon stuff. My cake turned out better than I imagined (see pics) and our friend Abby brought over these amazing bacon cupcakes with maple syrup icing. I know, it sounds really weird, but they were the best thing at the party. I will have to make them soon. My cake wasn't really a cake...it was a savory cornbread cake with potato/sour cream frosting. I made this beautiful bacon lattice top to decorate the top. Yummy! We even at it for breakfast with fried eggs on top this morning.
As for the cheap beer challenge, almost everyone was guessing wrong. Therefore, the final conclusion is: There is no difference in cheap beers so just buy the one that is on sale.

Ummmm....Bacon
Yes, the bacon party is so close now...it even has an official name: Bacon, Beer, and Bocce. We are making bacon wrapped shrimp, bacon/sweet potato biscuits, bacon/artichoke dip, bacon deviled eggs, and bacon cake. I heard a rumor that Shannon is bringing bacon/apple cookies. I guess it isn't really a rumor since she told me herself. Anyway, to all my friends in the area, bring any thing else bacon infused, crusted, or wrapped that you can think of. Also, bring your favorite cheap beer (at least a tall boy or two) so we can have the "cheap beer challenge". There will be prizes for the beer masters who can successfully pick out the most correct beers. You can also bring whatever type of non-cheap beer you want. Saturday is supposed to be really nice and warm, kinda like today...I got to lay out in my yard and soak up some rays. I need to work on a base tan before Andy and I get to Arkansas...because I will actually get to wear tank tops and shorts and I don't want to burn. Us NorCal kids don't really get to see the sun that much and when we do...it is not usually warm enough to wear tank tops and shorts at the same time.
See you all on Saturday at the party; and I will see all you Arkansas kids next week.
Here is one of our favorite comedians sharing his views on bacon: Video Link

Yippee....we're home!
We are back in the "Blue Lake" and happy to be here...other than that earthquake that just happened a couple of minutes ago. I am pretty used to them by now; I always think someone is driving their truck into our house when they happen because our house makes such loud noises. But this last scared me enough to move from the back of my house closer to the front door in case I needed to get outside quickly. But, luckily I survived and we are now enjoying our house that is still standing.
Our trip down south was very exhausting for me...physically because we drove over 1300 miles in a couple of days, mentally because I had to confront a lot of beliefs that I have about SoCal, and emotionally because of the reunion of dad with the family. First, we drove down to Cortney and Dust's house in Oakland to see them before they go back to Vermont for the summer...which makes us very sad. We did get to rock out on the "Rock Band" and eat really good food with our friends and that makes us happy, but we will miss having our friends so close for the summer. Next we picked up Mom and headed down to the desert on a mission for dad. What a long friggin' drive down I-5! The entire right hand lane was filled with trucks and the entire desert was filled with food...more food than I could have ever imagined. The central valley provides one half of the nations fruits and vegetables in the summer and around 70% of the nations food in the winter. I mean can you even imagine that much food...all grown in one area that makes up approximately 10% of the state that is a desert? Well, it was an eye-opening experience for me because I have some serious issues with the transportaion of all that water to a desert in the first place, but after I saw the food production I had to rethink my beliefs about our whole food system here in the US. It was really hard seeing all the oil wells just sucking the earth dry, but I do drive and car and use electricity so I can't really complain much about that stuff...it was just really hard to see it all in person. It was a constant battle in my head between seeing our precious resources being used up so effortlessly and being aware of my own consumption in this world.
Enough about my environmental beliefs and onto the happy stuff...we picked up dad early Friday morning as the sun rose over the oils wells Taft, CA. What a reunion! He hadn't shaved or cut his hair the whole time he was in...he called it a "grizzly adams" beard, but Andy and I think he looked more like Andrew Weil. We quickly exited the facility and went on a hunt for breakfast. The drive back was nice and we had a great couple of days back at their home in Santa Rosa...sushi, beer, and ice cream! Yummy!! We drove back after the weekend and are glad to be home in Humboldt...even if it is a little cold. We are now preparing for our bacon party/holiday on Saturday. I will be making a savory bacon cake with cornbread, cheesy "icing" and of course bacon. I will post some pictures soon.

The bird has flown the coup...
We are leaving tomorrow morning to head south for the grand event of the year. Andy's dad will be released from prison on Friday morning at 7am, after 10.5 months! What a party we will have this weekend! Mom is so excited that she can barely talk, and Andy will get to eat bacon again. For those of you that don't know about this subject...Andy's dad was the doctor that got in trouble with all the NFL steroid crap about 2 years ago. Well, he got sentenced in a federal prison down in SoCal and finally gets to come home this weekend. As for the bacon story...well, Andy wanted to do something as an act of consolidarity while his father was locked up. His first idea was to grow a beard for the entire 10.5 months, but I explained that that would really be making me suffer also. Since I wasn't really ready for any acts of consolidarity that drastic, I mentioned that he should give up something he loves...bacon. And when I say my man loves bacon, I mean he LOVES bacon. So this chapter in life is coming to a close and we will be celebrating for the next couple of days.
PS-We will be having a bacon party at our house on Saturday the 3rd...potluck style, anything you want as long as bacon is an ingredient. I will be making a bacon cake and we will have a cheap beer taste test to go along...kinda like the Pepsi challenge with PBR, Miller, and Coors.

Video Game Extravaganza!
Remember when you were a kid, and you would play a video game for hours trying to beat it...well, Andy and I downloaded Super Mario Bros. (1985 version) and the 1st Zelda on our Wii. We couldn't stop playing last night, and now we both have the dreaded "Nintendo Thumb". That is when your left thumb is so sore from rolling around on the control to move you little man; we have to build up a callus for extended play times. Well, regardless of the pain we must endure, playing those games is a lot of fun! I am not the biggest fan of video games (except of course Smooth Moves, which is the best game ever), but the nostalgia of those games alone is worth playing...not to mention we are having a lot of fun bouncing on koopas!! Oh yeah, one other drawback...we constantly "sing" the theme to Super Mario Bros. even when the game isn't on.

New Motivation
I just got a new burst of motivation this morning...our good friend called from the East Coast and informed us that he may be transferred to the Bay Area next month. Yippee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was just the push I needed to refuel my fire for "the great job search". I started the search again today, and found some really neat places that did environmental work in the area. And, as an added bonus, I ran into an friend that was visiting Humboldt who just finished the job hunt recently. He helped reassure me about the importance of the right fit between a company and and individual. (Thanks Micah) I know the right place for me to work will come along and I will be happy when I get to actually make my dent in this world.

Don't judge a book by its cover.
I always try to remind myself not to (judge a book by cover), but sometimes I forget. Like when I first heard of Vampire Weekend...all I could imagine was some teenage goth band (not that there is anything wrong with a teenage goth band, just not my favorite type of music). I kept hearing their name, and would cringe a little bit every time. I thought, "Who would go see that band, they are stupid". All this hostility based on a freakin' name. However, as I was flipping through the channels a couple of weeks ago, there was a video on that made me stop for a minute. Who was this band? I sat there and listened to the whole song, totally in love with whoever these people were. Then at the end of the video, the credits showed me that I was in love with Vampire Weekend. Needless to say, I felt bad and a little embarrassed that I made such a quick judgment on something like a name. It was a good little reminder to not be so judgmental about other things or people in my life. Here is the video that hooked me...we now own their album and listen to it about 2 times a day. I guess a better word to describe my feelings would be obsessed.

Yet another obsession
I just thought that I would share with you another obsession of mine, besides non-Newtonian fluid. It's called Amigurumi, and it is crocheted objects. For some reason I want a tea set, pirate, zombie, blue bird in nest, or candy (pretty much anything you can name) that has been crocheted. I don't really know what I would do with all of these things, as I don't really like to have random crap sitting around my house. All the crap sitting around my house serves a purpose at some point or another. Even though my floor is filled with shoes, magazines, laundry, flower bulbs, and weights...they are all useful objects at some point in the day. I just wouldn't fill right filling my rooms up with all of these weird little objects, but something deep inside of me wants to just a little. If only I didn't already have 14 million other craft/projects that I need to work on, I could learn to crochet and make some of these things. I better
just finish up some things that I have already started...like that strawberry embroidered dress that has been waiting for a zipper for 2 years.

I won, I won!
So, I entered a contest with my favorite shoe designer by sending in picture for a contest they were having...I just found out that I won! Yippee!! What girl doesn't love free shoes from their favorite store? Here is the pic that won it for me: My fluevog collection on top of our car. (Yes, I know that I have too many shoes.) If you have never heard of Fluevog before, you should peek inside his online store. Most of my collection is pretty tame compared to the styles that he conjures up.
For example, the second picture is a pair of red boots that I purchased to sell on ebay. They are covered in red pony hair, with a cloven hoof as the heel. I felt like a gazelle in these things. It took me about 10 minutes to put them on, and another minute to figure out how to stand up once I got them on.
Non-Newtonian Fluid
Oh how I love non-Newtonian fluids...I am just completely fascinated by the change between fluid and solid state of this stuff. This is one of my favorite videos on the web where some crazy people filled a tub with cornstarch and water; I have to do this one day!

To be or not to be
Well, another lazy day here at home...Andy and I walked around, and I took these pictures of all the things blooming in our yard. I think we will head to the garden store today and buy some veggie and herb plants to put in our garden (see our spiral herb garden above). We were originally planning on moving by next month, but my job search seems to be going a little slower than anticipated. So, since we will be here a little longer, we might as well plant a few things in the garden. I already filled the lower lever of the herb garden with strawberry plants, and we can enjoy lettuce in just a few weeks.
As for the job-search, it might help if I applied to more than just 4 places. I keep going back and forth between wanting to begin my career as an engineer and wanting to just travel. Maybe this is the world's way of telling me to go to Egypt or something...Andy and I really want to go visit so many places, that we do not even know where to begin.

As the birthday week comes to a close...
I celebrated my 32nd birthday this past week, and it was wonderful. Andy and I went to "Berk-a-ley" for my very first job interview and got to visit with our friends (one of which inspired me to create this amazing blog, thanks C-Dawg). We returned home just in time for the actual birthday-day and had a fabulous dinner with friends that ended in chocolate covered strawberries. Who doesn't love chocolate covered strawberries? For the wrap up, we went camping in a beautiful redwood forest on the Van Duzen River. Thank goodness spring has begun, because we got to lay out like lizards on the beach and soak up the first rays of the season. Happy Birthday, Me!!!
